CRDB, CFA Society to nurture investment professionals

DAR ES SALAAM: CRDB Bank has partnered with CFA Society East Africa to sponsor the CFA Research Challenge Regional Finals in Tanzania, with the aim of enhancing its contribution to skills development.

The global challenge, which aims at equipping and nurturing young investment and finance professionals, recruits’ participants from across the world, where regional competitions are conducted to get representatives who take part in the grand finale.

CRDB Group’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Abdulmajid Nsekela said over the weekend the bank has been selected as the regional subject company for the 2024/25 CFA Research Challenge which will contribute to the development of young financial minds.

“CRDB recognises the importance of investing in young talent. As part of implementing our 5-year strategy, we are committed to supporting the youth by providing platforms that nurture skills, innovation and career development.

“Our partnership with CFA reflects this commitment—it is not just about sponsorship but about fostering excellence, integrity and innovation in the industry,” said Mr Nsekela.

Mr Nsekela also expressed his gratitude to the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA) and Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) for their invaluable contribution to this initiative.

In 2023/2024 season, DSE served as the subject company, laying a strong foundation for this year’s challenge.

CFA Society Administrator–Tanzania Ms Lucy Shantiwa, said participating students conduct in-depth research on CRDB, analysing its financials, operations, industry dynamics and potential risks allowing them to offer professional advice to potential investors.

After a thorough review of the works presented, four teams emerged winners in this season and they include University of Dodoma-Team A from Tanzania, Uganda Management Institute–Team E, Strathmore University Kenya–Team A and the University of Rwanda–Team B.

“These teams will now advance to the sub-regional stage of the competition. Winners of the sub-regional competitions will proceed to the regional and ultimately, the global final, where a single team will be crowned the global champion,” said Ms Shantiwa.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that equips university students with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful careers in finance.

Participants engage in rigorous training in financial analysis, valuation, report writing and professional ethics while analysing a publicly traded company, known as the subject company.

In the 2024 East Africa regional competition, CRDB has been designated a subject company allowing students who participate in the East Africa regional challenge to analyse its financial statements.

This time around, a total of 145 students from 29 teams representing 16 universities from Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda participated the competition benefitting from the invaluable support of 77 industry professionals who served mentors, graders and judges.
