CCM promises sports boost

DODOMA: THE ruling party – Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has committed to enhancing sports infrastructure as Tanzania gears up to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2025 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.
This initiative was highlighted in CCM’s 2025–2030 manifesto, presented during an Extraordinary General Congress in Dodoma.
The Chairperson of the Manifesto Committee, Kitila Mkumbo, underlined the party’s dedication to promoting national culture, arts and sports by constructing modern stadiums that meet international standards, including structures for AFCON City in Arusha.
Tanzania’s preparations to host AFCON 2027 are well underway, marking a historic milestone for the country’s growing influence in continental sports.
For the first time, Tanzania will also host CHAN 2025, reflecting increasing confidence in the country’s sporting infrastructure and organisational capacity.
The government has reported significant progress in the construction and renovation of key stadia ahead of the tournament.

The Arusha Stadium is 40.8 per cent complete, while the Dodoma Stadium project has officially begun, following the signing of the construction contract on February 13th 2025.
Renovations at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam have reached 85 per cent completion and works at New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar have been finalised.
In addition, five training grounds are being built or upgraded, including Major General Isamuhyo Stadium, Leaders Club, Gymkhana, the Law School grounds and Farasi ground, to ensure adequate facilities for teams during the competitions.
Participation of Tanzanian teams in international tournaments has surged from 68 events in 2020 to 402 in 2025, offering athletes invaluable exposure and promoting the country’s image abroad.
As a result of these sustained efforts, Tanzania has improved its global FIFA ranking from 137th in 2020 to 107th in 2025, signifying a growing presence on the global football stage.
