SHINYANGA: CHAMA Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has called on citizens to respond to President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s call to register in the Residence Register so that they become eligible to participate in the forthcoming Local Government Election.

The call was made yesterday by CCM Secretary General, Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi during a public rally held at Shinyanga Municipality.

Tanzania is set to conduct Local Government Election on November 27 this year. President Samia has already launched the 10-day registration exercise that began on Friday and will run until October 20.

Dr Nchimbi said President Samia has set a good example by registering in the residence register at Chamwino Ikulu Street in Dodoma and emphasised that every eligible Tanzanian should take the opportunity to register.

“Our President has registered in the residence register at her polling station, so let us support her by ensuring that every CCM member and Tanzanian takes the opportunity to register,” Dr Nchimbi said.

He noted that in the upcoming election, Tanzanians have every reason to support CCM because the party is capable and committed to continuing to lead the nation

“The implementation of development projects has been done at a satisfactory pace and that is why Tanzanians want President Samia to vie for another five-year term and the greatest gift to the president would be to give her overwhelming support by voting for her in large numbers during the election,” he said.

Dr Nchimbi noted that CCM has continued to grow in number of its members, while holding its meetings by adhering to the Constitution.

Meanwhile, the CCM Publicity, Ideology and Training Secretary, Mr Amos Makalla, said that opposition parties do not encourage citizens to exploit economic opportunities, because they know that if young people become economically empowered, they will lose people to participate in protests.

He said the achievements that continue to be registered in the country is a result of good leadership of CCM, “This is the year of Local Government Election, where we will elect village, hamlet and street chairpersons. For this election, we will use the residence register, so let’s come out and register so as to be eligible to vote,” he said.

“Today (Thursday), you saw our President getting registered, but have you seen Freeman Mbowe or John Mnyika registering?” Makalla asked, emphasising that after registering, people should ensure they participate in voting.

CCM Secretary for Political Affairs and International Relations, Mr Rabia Abdallah Hamid, called on the youth to avoid being influenced into participating in protests.

He said the government has provided various economic opportunities of which the youth should take advantage of them, including 10 per cent loans being provided by councils.

Speaking immediately after being listed in the register on Friday, Dr Samia asked Tanzanians to utilise the given period to exercise their democratic rights by ensuring that they register as well as participate in voting.

She said the ongoing exercise is of unique importance because the leaders to be elected will help in issues of security and peace at the local levels, adding that social services ought to begin at the local leadership levels.

“I wish to ask all eligible Tanzanians that beginning today (October 11) to 20 this year, to participate in the registration exercise at their localities, as well as secure chances to vote or be voted for in the coming civil poll,’’ she noted.
