DODOMA: Efforts by cartoonists in the media have influenced stakeholders to recognize their contribution to societal development.
During strategic discussions at the World Press Freedom Day commemoration held on May 3, 2024, in Dodoma, cartoonists discussed their importance in promoting democracy, political accountability, and sustainable development.
Led by cartoonist Adam Lutta from Tanzania Standard Newspapers (TSN) Ltd, , the discussions centred on the role of cartoonists in journalism and development, expressing eagerness to fully participate in various media-related projects.
They also requested empowerment to gain understanding of various development issues and to be involved in national events, emphasizing that they should not be seen as mere critics with a negative perspective but as important stakeholders in fostering development.
UNESCO’s Information and Communication Officer, Nancy Kaizilege, urged cartoonists to present their proposals to development stakeholders as a crucial step in leveraging the power of cartoons in conveying information through art.
The session was well-attended by various cartoonists in the country as part of the World Press Freedom Day forum.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa was an official guest at the event.
The World Press Freedom Day in 2024 heralded by the theme: “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis.”
The forum, organized by UNESCO and its partners, which brings together media stakeholders and experts, underscored the importance of collective participation in discussing the principles of freedom of expression, press freedom, and the importance of media to society.
Additionally, the forum also discussed the impacts of technological advancements, including the rapid increase in the use of Artificial Intelligence, which can significantly contribute to public awareness and promote sustainable development through cartoon art.
