ZANZIBAR: THE Parliamentary Committee on Governance, Constitution and Legal Affairs has pledged to advise the Union government to ensure that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties in Zanzibar receives the necessary resources to construct its own modern building.

The Committee Vice Chairperson, Mr Florent Laurent Kyombo, made the pledge during an inspection visit to Kisakasaka, the proposed site for the construction of the political parties Registrar’s office in Zanzibar.

Mr Kyombo said that having a dedicated office would significantly improve the efficiency of the registrar’s operations, ensuring that all registered political parties’ function in line with the law.

“We believe that this building will be operational in a short time. We urge the responsible authorities to oversee the project diligently and ensure that construction begins within the next six months,” Kyombo noted.

He also stressed the need for equal development efforts between Zanzibar and Mainland, noting that the registrar must ensure the office in Zanzibar receives the same attention as in the Mainland.

“We know you have successfully constructed several buildings in the Mainland, and we expect you to achieve the same here in Zanzibar. Our goal is to ensure both offices are well-established to provide essential services,” he stated.

Mr Kyombo also commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Mwinyi for their dedication to national development and their efforts to ensure that all parties of the Union receive the same services.

The Deputy Minister in the Vice President’s Office (Union Affairs and Environment), Mr Hamza Hassan Chilo, praised President Mwinyi’s efforts in securing land for the Registrar’s office, which he said would help address challenges facing political parties in Zanzibar.

According to him, though there is an office in Zanzibar, it is not an official facility for conducting political party activities and addressing related challenges.

Mr Chilo urged the Registrar’s office to begin construction immediately, as land has already been allocated and funds are available.

He hinted that the Tanzanian government was planning to establish a modern ‘Union Tower,’ which will house all Unionrelated offices and institutions to improve service delivery and resolve challenges concerning Union affairs.

The Registrar of Political Parties, Judge Francis Mutungi, confirmed that all preliminary arrangements have been completed, and they are now awaiting the Zanzibar Building Agency (ZBA) to sign the contract.

According to him, the government has already allocated 940m/- for the project, and construction is expected to begin within six months as per the schedule.
