Bright future on track as Kigoma joins the SGR era

KIGOMA: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan’s launch of the Tabora-Kigoma Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) yesterday marks one of the most significant milestones in Tanzania’s infrastructure journey.

Together with the inauguration of new cargo vessels on Lake Tanganyika and the upgraded Kigoma Port cargo terminal, the event underscored the government’s determination to transform western Tanzania into a gateway for regional trade and economic growth.

The 2.7 billion US dollars (about 7.12tri/-) investment in the 506-kilometre electrified railway is more than a transport project.

It completes a vital section of the Central Corridor, extending the SGR to Kigoma while preparing for a future link with the planned Uvinza-Musongati railway, strengthening Tanzania’s role as a leading regional transport hub.

Projects of this scale require substantial financing through domestic resources and carefully managed borrowing.

Such investment should be judged not by its immediate cost but by the value of the assets it creates. Efficient transport and energy infrastructure boost productivity, lower business costs, attract private investment and strengthen national competitiveness.

For Kigoma and Tabora, the opportunities are immense. Farmers will access markets more easily, mining companies will move bulk cargo more efficiently, while traders, manufacturers and tourism operators will benefit from lower logistics costs. Passengers will also enjoy faster, safer and more reliable travel.

The project’s significance extends beyond Tanzania. By strengthening links between the Port of Dar es Salaam and the landlinked economies of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, the railway will enhance regional trade.

Together with Lake Tanganyika’s expanding maritime services, it will create an integrated multimodal transport network.

President Samia’s inauguration of additional cargo vessels and improvements at Kigoma Port therefore complement the railway.

Rail, ports and lake transport are mutually reinforcing investments that will unlock western Tanzania’s commercial potential and strengthen the Great Lakes economy.

Modern infrastructure also stimulates industrial development, value addition, job creation and urban growth.

Towns along the railway corridor can expect increased business activity as investors respond to improved connectivity.

Yet infrastructure alone does not guarantee prosperity. The private sector must seize the opportunities created by the railway by investing in production, logistics, manufacturing and cross-border commerce, supported by efficient regulation and trade facilitation. Equally important is ensuring the railway is professionally managed and well maintained.

Preserving its efficiency, safety and financial sustainability will determine whether it continues delivering benefits for generations.

The groundbreaking ceremony of yesterday is more than the start of another construction project. It is a strategic investment in Tanzania’s future.

The SGR, together with modern ports, cargo vessels and future regional rail links, will reshape western Tanzania into a major trade gateway, carrying the promise of stronger regional integration, greater competitiveness and shared prosperity.
