BRELA registers over 5,000 companies in 100 days, youth dominate

DODOMA: THE Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA) have recorded significant achievements in the first 100 days of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration, registering 5,045 companies across the country.

BRELA Chief Executive Officer, Mr Godfrey Nyaisa, revealed the progress yesterday in Dodoma during a capacitybuilding seminar for councillors from the Dodoma City Council.

He said a total of 3,120 companies are owned by youth, alongside 8,792 business names, with 4,938 belonging to young entrepreneurs. The one-day session aimed at equipping the councillors with a deeper understanding of business formalisation processes to enable them to effectively support traders in their respective wards.

Mr Nyaisa said the agency has also registered 1,018 trademarks owned by youth, issued 149 industrial licences, half of them to young investors and granted 5,430 Category A business licences, with 50 per cent allocated to youth.

“These achievements clearly demonstrate the significant contribution of young people to the country’s industrial and commercial growth,” he said, noting that the progress has been driven by continuous reforms in policies and laws, as well as the strengthening of digital systems.

He added that BRELA services are now fully accessible Govt seeks order in Kahama mining stand-off BRELA registers over 5,000 companies in 100 days, youth dominate cal exercise and ensuring adequate rest are essential components of a healthy lifestyle that should not be overlooked.

Mr Mkomi further noted that workplace productivity is closely linked to the overall well-being of employees, calling on public institutions to continue promoting wellness programmes that support both physical and mental health.

He said such initiatives would not only improve staff morale but also contribute to better institutional performance. In a related development, Permanent Secretary extended his best wishes to the Utumishi Sports Club as it prepares to participate in the upcoming May Day sports competitions scheduled to take place in Njombe Region.

He urged players, coaches and the technical bench to remain disciplined, committed and focused, while upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship throughout the competition.

“Go to the competition with determination and discipline. Strive to demonstrate a higher level of performance compared to what you showed during SHIMIWI 2025,” he said.

Mr Mkomi added that participation in sports is not only important for physical fitness but also helps to strengthen teamwork, unity and resilience among public servants. He expressed confidence that the Utumishi Sports Club would represent the office with distinction and bring pride to the institution.

He concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to promoting the welfare of public servants, noting that a healthy and motivated workforce remains central to achieving national development goals. Prioritise health for better service, workers told online through smartphones, a move that has simplified registration processes and expanded access, particularly for young entrepreneurs.

Citing President Samia’s address to Parliament in November 2025, Mr Nyaisa said empowering youth economically remains a key government priority, given that about 60 per cent of Tanzania’s population falls within the youth bracket. He emphasised the central role of councillors in driving socio-economic development, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, commerce and industry.

According to him, the training equips councillors with the knowledge needed to guide traders especially youth benefiting from council loans on how to register companies, business names and protect their innovations through BRELA systems.

Mr Nyaisa also raised concern over persistent confusion in some councils, where business officers issue Category B licences to traders who are legally required to hold Category A licences. He said BRELA inspections continue to uncover such discrepancies.

He urged councillors to apply the knowledge gained to protect traders from misinformation and unnecessary financial burdens, while assuring that BRELA will continue strengthening capacitybuilding initiatives for local government officials.

Dodoma City Mayor, Mr Alimwona Chaula, commended the training, noting that councillors are the closest representatives of the government to the people and are therefore best positioned to guide community-level business development.

“All businesses start at the ward level. This seminar is crucial as it boosts your ability to educate and support our people,” he said, calling on BRELA to extend similar training to Ward Executive Officers (WEOs) and Village Executive Officers (VEOs).
