Boost in public service delivery as project provides ICT facilities

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR is stepping up efforts to modernise public service delivery after receiving 36 computers and other ICT equipment under the Digital Tanzania Project (DTP).

The rollout, led by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, is part of a broader push to improve efficiency in government operations and expand access to services through digital platforms. The equipment was handed over at Law House in Mazizini, Unguja, in what officials described as another step towards reducing bureaucratic delays and strengthening digital governance.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister, Permanent Secretary in the Zanzibar Ministry of Communication, Information Technology and Innovation, Ms Fatma Mabrouk Khamis, said the equipment would empower public servants and enhance transparency.

“These tools will accelerate service delivery and ensure citizens receive services more quickly, securely and transparently,” she said.

She stressed that ICT is now a critical driver of economic and social development, enabling governments to respond effectively to citizens’ needs. Ms Khamis noted that the government is developing integrated digital systems, including digital identification, electronic payments and data exchange platforms, to support a connected public service. She also urged public servants to utilise the equipment responsibly and innovatively.

The initiative aligns with Tanzania’s Digital Economy Strategy (2024–2034) and Vision 2050, which targets 80 per cent of public services being delivered digitally. Digital Tanzania Project Coordinator, Mr Bakari Mwamgugu, said the project focuses on interoperability ensuring systems across institutions can communicate and share data efficiently.

He added that government institutions have received internet bundles of up to 20GB, while the Zan e-Exchange platform under the Zanzibar e-Government Agency is nearing completion. One-stop service centres have also been established to enable citizens to access multiple services in one location, while digital platforms will allow remote access.

So far, 211 institutions including hospitals, schools and government offices have been connected to the national fibre optic backbone. The project has also trained 450 government officials in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Machine Learning and Cybersecurity.

Permanent Secretary in the President’s Office, Ms Mansoura Mosi Kassim, welcomed the initiative, pledging effective utilisation of the equipment to improve service delivery.
