Barrick North Mara donates items, cash to help Musoma residents affected by rains

MARA: North Mara Gold Mine has teamed up with some of its contractors to donate items and cash towards helping Musoma residents who were recently rendered homeless following the destruction of their houses by rains

The mine on Thursday donated 45.2m/- , 200 bags of cement and 20 mattresses to the Mara Regional Commissioner Col Evans Mtambi as assistance to the affectef people.

The assistance comes after a few days in support of President Samia Suluhu Hassan who donated 100m/- to meet the humanitarian needs of the Musoma municipality dwellers whose houses were damaged by the midnight rains early this month.

Speaking to a team of North Mara workers led by Community Relations Manager, Francis Uhadi, and his assistant, Nasieku Kisambu, Col. Mtambi thanked the mine’s management and contractors for their timely assistance to the affected people.

He said he was proud that Mara region has investors like Barrick who are concerned with the welfare of other people.

“Let me thank Barrick and other stakeholders. This is the true spirit of Tanzanians, and I, as the Regional Commissioner, I feel proud of your presence. I can’ t get the best words to express my thanks because the situation of the affected people was pathetic,” he said.

The Tarime-based North Mara Gold Mine is operated by Barrick and the Tanzania government as a joint veture through Twiga Minerals.

Col promised to cooperate with the Committee tasked with assisting the affected Musoma residents to ensure that the Barrick donation reaches the victims as planned.

According to the Regional Commissioner, some of the affected people have their needs fulfilled while others need more assistance.

He said those whose needs have been fulfilled include the aged of which houses have been built for them.
Heavy midnight rains accompanied by strong winds destroyed houses, roads, and electricity infrastructure in Musoma town, calling government urgency to help the affected population.
