Australia lauds Tanzania’s efforts in addressing impacts of climate change
DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government has been commended for its efforts to address the impacts of climate change through the implementation of various policies, strategies, and programmes aimed at strengthening environmental, economic, and social resilience.
The commendation was made by the Acting Australian High Commissioner to Tanzania, Andrew Barnes, during his discussions with the Permanent Secretary of the Vice President’s Office, Dr Richard Muyungi, held in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking during the meeting, Barnes said Tanzania has continued to demonstrate leadership in addressing climate change challenges by implementing various measures that promote sustainable development and enhance communities’ capacity to cope with the effects of climate change.
He highlighted the construction of a protective seawall along Obama Road in Dar es Salaam as one of the effective measures being implemented by the government to address climate change impacts.
According to Barnes, the project has contributed to strengthening infrastructure resilience against coastal erosion and ocean waves while protecting people’s lives, properties, and key economic infrastructure.
On his part, the Permanent Secretary of the Vice President’s Office, Dr Richard Muyungi, said the government continues to prioritise climate change issues due to their increasing impacts on people’s livelihoods as well as social and economic development.

Dr Muyungi said climate change is not only a scientific issue but also a challenge that affects critical sectors, including the economy, food security, health, the environment, and the overall well-being of society.
He further noted that the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, continues to demonstrate leadership in Africa’s climate change agenda through her role as the African Union Champion for Clean Cooking Energy, as well as her membership in the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).
Dr Muyungi emphasised that the government will continue working with development partners to implement various measures aimed at addressing climate change impacts, protecting the environment, and ensuring sustainable development for the benefit of current and future generations.
