ALAT requests a day for local governments

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Association of Local Authorities of Tanzania (ALAT) chairman, Murshid Ngeze, has appealed to President Samia Suluhu Hassan to designate a week dedicated to local governments.

This week will provide an opportunity to showcase various activities carried out by these local authorities and highlight their achievements.

The event can be held annually, offering diverse economic prospects and strengthening local economies.

He made the statement in Dar es Salaam explaining that the local government week would serve as an opportunity for citizens to learn about and see firsthand the opportunities available within local councils.

‘’The week can offer an opportunity for local governments to invite various international organizations, businesses, and companies to showcase their work. This will open doors for citizens to acquire skills and explore numerous economic opportunities,’’ he noted

He wrapped up by mentioning that ALAT has devised plans to build a multi-purpose economic building with four floors, which will include offices and meeting halls.

While addressing this, he called on councilors to hold public meetings to inform citizens about the performance of the government under Samia Suluhu Hassan’s presidency

Furthermore, Ngeze expressed his gratitude to President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for attending the 39th ALAT meeting held in Dodoma, where the theme was “Participate in the 2025 Elections for Sustainable Development.

During the previous ALAT meeting, the President shared updates on her promises made in 2021, including the construction of over 13,000 classrooms, health centers in various districts, and the establishment of Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) colleges in every region—projects that have already been completed.

Ngeze also extended his thanks to various stakeholders for their cooperation in making the meeting a success.

In addition, he highlighted key directives from the President, which included the continued careful management of revenue collection and reducing expenditure to facilitate development for the people.

He emphasized that local councils must align their plans with the national development agenda for 2025/2050.

He further stressed the importance of developing new sources of revenue to ensure increased local government income. Ngeze also highlighted the need to enforce laws within local authorities, particularly regulations around construction permits and investor activities.

He said areas designated for investment should remain reserved for that purpose, and local councils should communicate to citizens about ongoing and completed projects.
