Airtel expands digital footprint in Mwanza as demand for connectivity grows

MWANZA: Airtel Tanzania has expanded its digital presence in Mwanza following the launch of a new Smart Shop aimed at improving access to communication and financial services in the Lake Zone.
Speaking during the launch event, Ilemela District Commissioner Amir Mkalipa said the investment reflects the growing importance of digital connectivity in supporting trade, financial inclusion and economic growth in Mwanza.
“Technology is a bridge to development, and communication remains a powerful tool for connecting people, businesses and opportunities,” He said.
The DC noted that Mwanza continues to emerge as a strategic commercial hub within the Lake Zone, driven by fishing, agriculture, mining, trade, tourism and transport activities that increasingly depend on reliable communication services.
According to the 2022 Population and Housing Census, Mwanza Region has a population of 3.69 million people and covers 19,592 square kilometres.
Mr Mkalipa said improved digital services are becoming essential for residents, especially small traders, fishermen, farmers and young entrepreneurs seeking to expand their businesses through mobile communication and digital financial platforms.
“This is not simply the opening of a shop. It is part of a wider transformation where technology is bringing services closer to citizens and creating new economic opportunities,” He said.
The newly launched Airtel Smart Shop will provide services including Airtel Money support, SIM registration, high-speed internet services and smartphone access.
Airtel Tanzania Lake Zone Marketing Manager Mlaki Mchala said Mwanza is among the company’s fastest-growing regions due to increasing demand for digital and communication services.
“We currently serve more than 1.2 million customers in Mwanza Region and work with over 15,000 Airtel Money agents across urban and rural communities,” he said.
Mr Mchala added that Airtel continues investing in network infrastructure to improve service reliability and expand connectivity across the region.
“Businesses today depend heavily on communication and digital payments. Our goal is to ensure people remain connected wherever they are,” he said.
He noted that the company’s investments are supporting key economic sectors including fishing, agriculture, trade and small businesses through digital financial services and internet connectivity.
