Airport investment strengthens tourism competitiveness

DAR ES SALAAM: THE growing aviation and tourism markets are attracting investment in supporting services, improving passenger experiences, strengthening destination competitiveness and creating opportunities to generate greater economic value from international travel.

Against this backdrop, global airport hospitality provider Plaza Premium Group has opened its first lounge in Tanzania at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA), bringing international hospitality expertise into a growing market and expanding services for international travellers.

The investment comes as passenger traffic continues to rise, creating demand for complementary services and commercial opportunities across hospitality, transport, food supply and other tourism-related businesses.

Improved airport hospitality is increasingly important in strengthening Tanzania’s destination appeal, particularly as the country seeks to maximise tourism earnings from attractions such as the Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar.

Located near Gate 6 in JNIA Terminal 3’s international departures area, the 336-square-metre lounge accommodates up to 86 guests.

Facilities include comfortable seating, showers, food and beverages, workstations, internet access and multifaith prayer rooms.

Speaking at the launch, Plaza Premium Group’s Commercial Vice-President for EMEA, Anis Jmour, said the opening marked an important milestone in the company’s expansion across East Africa.

Meanwhile, JNIA Director Bertha Bankwa said the investment reflected the growth of the aviation sector and the importance of improving passenger services as travel demand increases.

The investment also presents opportunities for local suppliers through demand for food, beverages and other operational services. Its Proudly Local approach incorporates Tanzanian dishes and locally available products.

The development also reflects the growing importance of airport infrastructure in supporting Tanzania’s tourism ambitions.

As passenger numbers increase, investments in quality airport services can improve travellers’ experiences, encourage repeat visits and strengthen the country’s competitiveness as a regional tourism and aviation destination.
