AI, digital health technologies highlighted at Africa Medexpo

DAR ES SALAAM: A CALL has been made for greater collaboration in deploying artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital technologies to transform healthcare delivery in Tanzania and across Africa.

The call was made mid this week at the 26th Africa Medexpo in Dar es Salaam that ended yesterday during which more than 20 countries showcased innovations.

Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Director of Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI), Dr Mpoki Ulisubisya, said AI-powered tools are increasingly vital for early disease detection, reducing waiting times and improving service efficiency.

“The use of AI in healthcare is no longer optional. Machines capable of detecting illnesses at early stages will enhance the fight against infectious diseases and improve patient outcomes. This is where the future of medicine lies,” he emphasised.

Dr Ulisubisya said the Medexpo servedas a crucial platform to bridge gaps in Tanzania’s health system by facilitating dialogue with global innovators. He encouraged participants to explore investment opportunities, noting that Tanzania’s strategic location makes it a gateway to SADC and EAC markets with over 250 million people.

He further pointed out that the Medical Stores Department (MSD) has built capacity to distribute medical supplies regionally, strengthening Tanzania’s position as a health sector hub.

Expogroup Africa Executive Director, Mr Duncan Njage, said this year’s Medexpo recorded a 30 per cent increase in participation, reflecting growing international interest in Tanzania’s health sector.

Organised in collaboration with MSD and the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA), the event has evolved into one of East Africa’s most influential health forums.

According to Mr Njage, many exhibitors expressed interest in forging partnerships that would accelerate the adoption of AI-driven innovations across the region.

Themed around digital solutions, the 2025 edition of Medexpo spotlighted AI’s potential to reshape healthcare delivery.

Delegates and stakeholders voiced optimism that Tanzania’s favourable business environment, coupled with its regional position, will catalyse the rollout of transformative technologies and improve healthcare accessibility.
