AGITF seeks to enable farmers access credit by providing loans

TANGA: THE Agricultural Inputs Trust Fund (AGITF) is committed to addressing the challenges facing farmers in accessing credit, a barrier that discourages them from continuing with farming, while also creating opportunities to provide loans.

Speaking today, January 27, at the climax of the Financial Services Week celebrations in Usagara, Tanga, AGITF Chief Accountant Donald Lugelela explained how the fund’s loans are affordable compared to conventional commercial loans.

Lugelela stated that the fund has become a solution for agricultural input capital, helping farmers access seeds, fertilizers, and tools at low cost.

He also emphasized financial discipline among farmers through timely loan repayments, noting that this discipline forms the foundation for the fund’s sustainability.

Meanwhile, AGITF Legal Officer Hangi Chang’a highlighted how the institution protects farmers through friendly and legally binding terms. He explained that a borrowing farmer has both the right and the responsibility to follow the terms of the contract, stressing the importance of reading and understanding agreements before signing.

He also warned about the risks of informal loans, stating that they often result in losses and disputes for farmers.

Overall, AGITF has emerged as a key pillar in agricultural development, providing farmers with secure and affordable capital while offering legal protection.

AGITF’s Public Relations Officer, Jacqueline Materu, emphasized their continued goal of providing education through fairs and exhibitions, urging the public to attend and gain knowledge.

Speaking at the event, TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Juma said that customs duties include protecting the society by ensuring that goods entering and exiting the country through all 99 border points comply with national laws, international agreements, as well as health and environmental standards.

He stated that customs officers must continue to enhance vigilance, integrity, and professionalism in executing their duties to curb the entry of illicit goods and safeguard national interests.

Commissioner Juma added that the use of 57 scanners deployed at various borders and ports across the country has improved efficiency in detecting and preventing the entry of illegal goods, including drugs, a measure that helps protect public health and safety.

Meanwhile, the Director General of the Drug Control and Enforcement Authority, Aretas James, said that the customs department plays a critical role in the fight against illicit trade, particularly drugs, as a large portion of such substances are seized at the country’s borders.
