Tanzania sign to cooperate with Algeria in fisheries, aquaculture projects

BOUSMAIL: TANZANIA and Algeria have agreed to establish collaborative research initiatives involving the Algerian National Center for Fisheries Research and Aquaculture Development and Tanzanian institutions focusing on fisheries and aquaculture and mutual capacity building.
The move was revealed when the Tanzanian Ambassador to Algeria, Iman Njalikai, visited the National Center for Fisheries Research and Aquaculture Development, located in Bousmail Municipality, Tipaza Province, Algeria, to discuss ways of strengthening cooperation between the center and Tanzanian institutions, thereby contributing to the growth of Tanzania’s blue economy sector.
The Ambassador was received by the Center’s Director General, Prof. Nabil Bouflih, during a meeting attended by other senior officials of the center, including the Director General of the Fisheries Chamber in Algeria, Nabil Aouiche, and the Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Department, Souad, from the Ministry responsible for fisheries and marine life.
During the visit, the Ambassador had the opportunity to learn about the center’s history.

Established in 1921 as a marine fisheries and aquaculture station, the center was upgraded in 1968 to a scientific institute for marine fisheries and aquaculture, and finally, in 2008, it became the National Center for Fisheries Research and Aquaculture Development, specializing in marine life.
The Ambassador also toured various laboratories at the center, including those for saltwater and cold-water fish farming, as well as research labs focused on fish feed. The center specializes in research on best practices for aquaculture, fisheries, marine ecosystems, and fish processing and related industries.
According to the discussions held, the officials agreed to establish collaborative research initiatives with Tanzanian institutions, particularly TAFIRI, focusing on fisheries and aquaculture and mutual capacity building. Prof. Nabil Bouflih expressed readiness to welcome a Tanzanian team to Algeria for knowledge exchange and to send a team of Algerian experts to Tanzania.
