Tanzania affirms timely completion of sports infrastructure for CHAN, AFCON

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has announced that it is currently prioritizing the completion of sports infrastructure projects intended to support the hosting of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2025) and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027).

This was said in the Parliament in Dodoma by the Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, while responding to a question from the Member of Parliament for Ilemela Constituency, Dr. Angeline Mabula, who wanted to know when the government plans to commence construction of a Centre of Excellence for sports in Ilemela Municipality, which occupies 16.75 hectares of titled land.

In his response, Deputy Minister Mwinjuma stated that the government is currently focusing on large-scale sports infrastructure projects aimed at preparing the country to host CHAN and AFCON, which are major international tournaments expected to bring prestige and significant development to the nation.

He further revealed that the government has already begun construction of a Sports Academy at the Malya Institute of Sports Development, located in Kwimba District, Mwanza Region.

 As of now, the implementation of the project has reached 25.4 percent completion.

However, the Deputy Minister noted that residents of Mwanza Region will benefit from the Malya project once completed, while preparations to launch the construction of the Ilemela sports centre are still underway. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring all sports projects are executed with professionalism and in line with national priorities.
