Dar es Salaam reaps 23bn/- in revenue to go 125 percent above goal

DAR ES SALAAM: DAR ES SALAAM region has recorded a significant milestone in government revenue collection from the mining sector, surpassing its 2024/25 financial year target from the mining sector.
By May 2025, the region had collected 23.02bn/-, exceeding its initial target of 18.36bn/- according to Regional Mining Officer and geologist, Lameck Gabote.
According to Geologist Gabote, the region reached its annual target as early as March and has now achieved 125 percent of the set goal.
Gabote attributed the milestone to robust oversight and effective management of various revenue streams, including royalties, fees, and other levies.

“For the upcoming 2025/26 financial year, we’ve been tasked with collecting 24bn/-. We are confident we will not only meet but exceed that target as well,” Gabote said, emphasizing that Dar es Salaam is fully committed to revenue mobilization. “We don’t sleep.”
While the region is not known for extensive mining activities, it has emerged as a strategic hub for the mineral trade.

According to Gabote, this is largely due to the presence of the International Mineral Market, the Dar es Salaam Port, and the Julius Nyerere International Airport, all of which facilitate both domestic and international mineral transactions.
He further noted that both Dar es Salaam and the neighbouring Coast Region are endowed with two key categories of minerals: construction and industrial minerals.
These have significantly contributed to government revenue, particularly through their use in major infrastructure projects such as the ongoing construction of the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system in the city
