Construction of Mbamba Bay hits advanced stages with 78 percent completion

MBAMBA BAY: CONSTRUCTION of Mbamba Bay Port in Nyasa District has reached 78 per cent completion, creating jobs, building technical skills and boosting small businesses in the area.
Young people working on the project say the jobs have enabled them to earn incomes to support their families, while others are gaining technical skills that could help them secure employment or establish their own businesses after construction ends.
The project is also expected to strengthen cargo transportation and trade between Tanzania and neighbouring Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.
Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) Project Supervising Engineer John Paul said Mbamba Bay is selected following a feasibility study conducted in 2023, which established its importance in improving port services.
He attributed the progress to government support and the timely availability of funds, which has enabled the contractor to receive payments on schedule.

“We thank the government for its vision and for releasing funds on time,” Paul said.
He also commended TPA Director General, Plasduce Mbossa, for overseeing the project’s implementation to ensure it meets government objectives and contributes to the growth of Mbamba Bay Port and other ports across the country.
Resident Engineer for Anova Company, Agathon Mwenda, said construction work was progressing well, with the contractor targeting completion on February 26, 2027, in line with the contract.
Once completed, the port is expected to improve cargo movement and strengthen Tanzania’s trade links with neighbouring countries, while expanding economic opportunities for communities in the surrounding areas.
