TCU admits 117,334, opens second window

DODOMA: THE Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) has opened the second undergraduate admission window for the 2026/27 academic year after 117,334 applicants secured admission to universities and other higher learning institutions during the first phase.

The admitted students account for 78.4 per cent of the 149,645 applicants who applied to 93 approved higher learning institutions during the first admission phase.

Speaking to journalists in Dodoma yesterday, TCU Executive Director, Professor Charles Kihampa said the second admission window opened on September 8 and will run until September 21, giving another opportunity to applicants who did not apply in the first phase or were unsuccessful.

“Universities and other higher learning institutions have been directed to advertise programmes that still have available places,” Prof Kihampa said.

He urged eligible applicants to take advantage of the second admission window and apply for programmes at their preferred institutions before the deadline.

The 2026/27 admission cycle has also recorded an increase in both undergraduate programmes and available admission places compared with the previous academic year.

The number of approved undergraduate programmes has risen to 1,019 from 894 in 2025/26, an increase of 125 programmes.

Available admission places have also increased to 227,555 from 205,652 last year, creating 21,903 additional places, equivalent to a 10.7 per cent increase.

Prof Kihampa also reminded applicants admitted to more than one institution that they must confirm admission to only one institution between September 8 and 21.

“Applicants admitted to more than one institution must confirm admission to one institution using the special secret code sent through the telephone number or email address used during the application process,” he said.

He said applicants who do not receive the confirmation code should access the admission systems of the institutions where they were admitted and request that the code be resent.

The list of applicants admitted to more than one institution is available on the TCU website, while admission confirmation must be completed through the account used during the application process.

Prof Kihampa said universities had also been instructed to assist applicants facing difficulties with the confirmation process and resolve their concerns promptly in line with the established admission guidelines.
