Tanzania targets expanded investment, trade with Malaysia
DODOMA: VICE-PRESIDENT Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi, has stressed the need to deepen strategic cooperation between Tanzania and Malaysia, with a focus on expanding investment and economic opportunities.
He made the remarks in Dodoma yesterday during talks with Tanzania’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Major General Mbaraka Mkeremy, noting that Malaysia’s strong economy presents significant prospects for enhanced bilateral engagement.
The VP urged the envoy to work diligently and creatively to strengthen diplomatic ties, attract more investors to Tanzania and expand existing opportunities between the two countries.
He also emphasised the importance of encouraging Tanzanians living in Malaysia to invest back home and contribute to national development.
Tanzania and Malaysia maintain cooperation in several areas, including trade and investment, tourism, education and cultural exchange, as well as science and technology, reflecting long-standing diplomatic relations between the two nations.
During the meeting, Dr Nchimbi congratulated Ambassador Mkeremy for the trust bestowed upon him by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, in appointing him to represent Tanzania in Malaysia.
He further advised the envoy to familiarise himself with the Dira 2050 and the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Election Manifesto 2025–2030 to effectively advance the country’s international relations priorities.
For his part, the High Commissioner thanked the President for the appointment and expressed gratitude to the VP for his guidance, pledging to execute his duties with professionalism and dedication.
Earlier this week, Zanzibar President Hussein Mwinyi directed the newly appointed High Commissioner to strengthen economic diplomacy by identifying investment opportunities, promoting trade and increasing the number of Malaysian tourists visiting Zanzibar.
Dr Mwinyi issued the directive during a meeting at State House in Zanzibar, where the envoy paid a farewell call and received guidance ahead of taking up his diplomatic assignment in Malaysia.
He emphasised the need to leverage opportunities in Malaysia to market Zanzibar as an attractive investment destination, particularly in tourism, hospitality, fisheries, oil and gas, and other Blue Economy sectors.
The president also stressed that economic diplomacy should focus on opening new markets for Zanzibar’s products and services while strengthening business and investment linkages between the two countries.
On education, Dr Mwinyi called for enhanced cooperation, including expanding scholarship opportunities for Zanzibari students and fostering partnerships between universities.
