Tanzania launches migration coordination framework

DODOMA: Tanzania has launched a National Migration Coordination Mechanism to bring government institutions and development partners under a more coordinated framework for managing migration and maximising its contribution to national development.
The mechanism, launched on Tuesday at Mabeyo Hall in Dodoma, was developed by the government in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The launch brought together government officials, United Nations representatives, IOM officials and other stakeholders involved in migration management.
Speaking at the event, Minister for Home Affairs Patrobas Katambi said effective migration management requires close cooperation among institutions because migration affects a wide range of national interests, including health, employment, development, investment and security.
“Tanzania values cooperation with various stakeholders, including IOM, to ensure that we strengthen systems and capacity to manage migration effectively. Migration encompasses health, development, employment, capital and national security. All these must be addressed without compromising the security, dignity and respect of society and the nation,” he said.

Mr Katambi said the new mechanism would improve coordination among stakeholders, strengthen the efficiency of migration management and help the country harness the economic opportunities associated with migration.
He said stronger coordination would also support Tanzania’s diplomatic engagement and ensure that migration-related programmes are implemented in a manner that protects national interests while respecting the rights and dignity of migrants.
IOM Director General Amy Pope said effective migration management depends on strong partnerships and coordination, particularly as countries respond to the complex challenges and opportunities associated with migration.
She said IOM’s cooperation with the Tanzanian government would continue to support systems and policies that serve the interests of both migrants and communities hosting them.
UN Resident Coordinator in Tanzania Susan Namondo said a coordinated approach was essential to ensure that institutions working on migration issues pursue common priorities and improve the effectiveness of related programmes.

Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner General of Immigration, Commissioner Amiru Sadick said the Immigration Department would continue working with IOM and other stakeholders to promote safe, orderly and rights-based migration.
IOM Tanzania Chief Ashraf Hassan said migration was a global issue that could not be effectively managed by one country or institution acting alone.
He said the new mechanism provides a platform for stronger collaboration and joint action while helping Tanzania ensure that the benefits and opportunities linked to migration contribute to national development.
