How AFCON training grounds set to spur economy

DAR ES SALAAM: CONSTRUCTION of three modern training grounds in Arusha for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is expected to open a new chapter of economic growth through sports tourism, business opportunities and job creation.

The facilities, currently under construction at Mgambo, Engutoto and Magereza at a cost exceeding 70 bn/- will serve as training venues for teams participating in AFCON 2027. Beyond the tournament, the grounds are expected to remain valuable sporting assets for the region and the country.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the projects, Arusha Regional Commissioner (RC), Amos Makalla, said the investment demonstrates the government’s commitment to use sports as a driver of economic development.

Makalla thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for providing funds for the project and noted that the facilities would strengthen Arusha’s position as a leading sports tourism destination in Africa.

“The presence of several football venues in Arusha is a major achievement. It is an opportunity for sports tourism and a catalyst for economic growth that complements wildlife tourism and conference tourism. I commend the government for implementing the strategy to successfully host AFCON 2027 by investing in the entire necessary infrastructure,” said Makalla.

He explained that the arrival of national teams, football officials, referees, journalists and supporters from across Africa would increase demand for hotels, restaurants, transport services, financial services and tourism products, creating additional income for residents and government revenues.

Makalla added that the benefits would extend well beyond the tournament itself, with the facilities expected to nurture young talent, host national and international competitions, attract training camps and encourage long-term investment in sports.

He also urged the contractor –  CRCEG Company, to accelerate construction works to ensure completion by March 2027 as stipulated in the contract.

CRCEG representative  Engineer Denis Mtemi revealed that construction progress across all three venues has reached 35 per cent.

“We are increasing the pace of implementation and aim to reach 80 per cent completion by August this year in preparation for CAF inspections. Our goal is to deliver facilities that meet international standards and hand them over on schedule,” said Mtemi.

Economic stakeholders, including Silva Bonaventure, believe the investment will generate employment, stimulate business activity and elevate Arusha’s international profile. With AFCON 2027 on the horizon, the city is poised to add sports tourism to its renowned wildlife and conference tourism sectors, creating lasting economic benefits for its people.
