Twiga ready for Burkina test

MOROCCO: TWIGA Stars Head Coach Bakari Shime says his team are ready for their second Group B match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) against Burkina Faso, after working on the weaknesses identified from their opening game.

Shime said the match is a must-win encounter as Tanzania look to strengthen their chances of progressing in the tournament. Tanzania began their campaign with a match against a South African side.

The Tanzanian ladies won 2-1. Shime added that the team used the following day after the match to recover before returning to training.

“We reviewed the mistakes we made in the previous match, but we also looked at the positive aspects that we need to continue improving,” Shime said.

He said the training session was important in helping the team prepare for their next match against Burkina Faso.

“This session will give us a clear picture of our team ahead of the real match against Burkina Faso,” he added.

Shime said the players’ fitness levels were improving, including those who experienced difficulties during the previous match.

He said the remaining training sessions would help the technical staff assess the players’ readiness before the game.

“Injuries will happen. Football is a contact sport, but the medical team is doing a great job to ensure the players return to normal,” Shime said.

He added that most players had returned to training, although the intensity of work varied depending on their physical condition.

Shime said he hoped the majority of the squad would be fully fit by match day, with only a few players potentially needing more time to recover.

Twiga Stars will face Burkina Faso in their next WAFCON 2026 fixture as they look to improve their performance in the tournament.
