Bahi markets get modern sanitation facilities

DODOMA: TRADERS and residents in Bahi District are expected to benefit from improved hygiene and sanitation after Habitat for Humanity officially handed over modern sanitation facilities at the Kigwe and Bahi livestock markets in Dodoma Region.

The project, funded by Guernsey, supports government efforts to improve sanitation infrastructure in public gathering places and help prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

The facilities, comprising 13 toilet cubicles, are expected to address a long-standing shortage of sanitation and waste management infrastructure at the two markets, which serve large numbers of traders and visitors.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Habitat for Humanity Country Director John Masenza said the facilities were constructed to high standards and designed to meet the needs of different groups within the community.

“The facilities are connected to a reliable water supply to ensure proper hygiene and cleanliness at all times,” he said.

Mr Masenza said the project also includes a menstrual hygiene room for girls and women, a breastfeeding room to provide privacy for mothers with infants, disability-friendly infrastructure, bathrooms and storage rooms for sanitation materials.

Apart from constructing the sanitation facilities, Habitat for Humanity has provided economic empowerment training through Village Community Banks (VICOBA) and worked with the Bahi District Council to develop environmental by-laws aimed at promoting proper sanitation and waste management.

Acting Bahi District Executive Director, Mr Peter Shirima said the council would strictly enforce the newly enacted by-laws to ensure the facilities are used responsibly and the environment remains clean.

“Anyone found polluting the environment despite the availability of these facilities will be fined 50,000/- on the spot,” Mr Shirima said.

He urged residents to put into practice the hygiene education they have received in order to maintain a clean environment and help prevent disease outbreaks.

Kigwe Ward Councillor, Adon Mabalwe commended Habitat for Humanity for addressing a long-standing challenge faced by traders and pledged that local leaders would ensure the facilities are properly managed and maintained.
