Tanzania wins WSIS Prizes for installing 758 new telecommunication towers

GENEVA: TANZANIA has won the prestigious World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2026 in recognition of its successful rollout of 758 telecommunications towers that have significantly expanded communication services to rural and previously unserved areas.

The award was received by Minister for Communication and Information Technology Angellah Jasmine Kairuki during the WSIS 2026 awards ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland, marking international recognition of the government’s efforts in strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure.

The award-winning project, that was officially launched by President Samia on April 10, 2026, has improved access to communication services in underserved communities, advancing Tanzania’s digital inclusion agenda and supporting socio-economic development.

In addition to the top honour, Tanzania earned nominations in seven categories at the WSIS Prizes 2026, ultimately securing two international awards and several certificates of recognition for outstanding ICT projects.

The WSIS Forum serves as the central multistakeholder convening platform mandated to advance the implementation of the WSIS Action Lines and support global digital cooperation. Anchored in the renewed UNGA mandate, the Forum brings together governments, the private sector, civil society, technical communities, academia, youth, and international organizations in a uniquely inclusive environment for dialogue, collaboration, and action.

The Forum remains the principal mechanism for reviewing, gathering multistakeholder input and advancing the WSIS Action Lines, including their annual roadmaps. International Telecommunication Union leads the coordination of the Event and it is co organized by ITU, UNESCO, UNDP, and UNCTAD, in partnership with more than fifty United Nations entities, ensuring a coherent system wide approach to the follow up of the WSIS outcomes.
