Bunge committee commends GGML for economic contribution

GEITA: THE Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has commended Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) for its contribution to Tanzania’s economy, commitment to local content development and investment in community development projects.

The remarks were made during an oversight visit to the mine, led by Deputy Minister for Minerals Dr Steven Kiruswa and Committee Chairperson Subira Mgalu.

During the visit, committee members toured key operational areas, including the mine’s main power substation and the Nyankanga Lookout Point, where they received briefings on mining operations, energy efficiency measures, carbon reduction initiatives and sustainability programmes.

The committee described GGML as a world-class mining operation and praised the company for its tax compliance, localisation of its workforce and community development efforts.

According to information presented during the visit, Tanzanians account for 95.6 per cent of GGML’s workforce, while more than 80 per cent of senior leadership positions are held by Tanzanians.

Committee members said the figures demonstrate the company’s commitment to developing local expertise and building national capacity within the mining sector.

The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss issues affecting the future of the mining industry, including mine closure preparedness, support for artisanal and small-scale miners, and strategies to ensure long-term socio-economic benefits for communities surrounding mining operations.

Members of the committee stressed the need for continued collaboration between the government, mining companies and local communities to maximise the benefits of the country’s mineral resources and promote sustainable development beyond the lifespan of individual mines.

GGML and AngloGold Ashanti officials, led by VicePresident for Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement Simon Shayo, responded to questions from committee members and provided updates on the company’s operational performance, community investment programmes and future plans.

Deputy Minister Kiruswa addressed policy-related matters and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting responsible mining practices and the continued growth of the sector.
