Trust the process, it will pay off in AFCON 2027

DAR ES SALAAM: THERE are moments in football when results matter less than the message behind them. Tanzania’s Under-17 national football team, the Serengeti Boys, delivered one such message during their remarkable campaign at the recently concluded U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.

Yes, they fell short in the final, losing 4-2 on penalties to Senegal after a spirited contest. Yes, the trophy slipped through their fingers after they surrendered a first-half lead. But when the dust settles, Tanzanians should not dwell on the heartbreak of defeat. Instead, they should celebrate the emergence of a generation that has shown the country what is possible when talent development is given time, support and direction.

The Serengeti Boys have done more than reach a final. They have provided a glimpse into the future of Tanzanian football. For years, football experts around the world have repeated the same formula for success: invest in youth, trust the process and remain patient. The world’s football giants did not become successful overnight.

Their achievements were built through strong youth structures, consistent development programmes and long-term planning. Under coach Elieneza Nzanganzelu, the Serengeti Boys have achieved something no Tanzanian youth team had accomplished before by reaching the final of a continental tournament.

This was not a lucky run. It was the result of preparation, discipline, tactical awareness and a winning mentality that grew stronger with each match. What makes the achievement even more impressive is that in their previous appearances at this level, the team did not advance beyond the group stage.

This time, they knocked on the door of continental glory and almost walked through it. Few would have predicted that the boys would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Africa’s traditional football powerhouses and compete for the title. Yet, they did exactly that.

Throughout the tournament, they played with confidence and maturity beyond their years, earning admiration from supporters across the continent. The final itself reflected the team’s growth. Taking a lead against a strong Senegal side showed courage and belief.

Although they were unable to maintain their advantage, they demonstrated that Tanzanian football can compete with the very best on the continent. That is why this campaign should not be viewed as a disappointment. It should be seen as a foundation. Every successful national team starts somewhere.

The current generation of players representing football powerhouses such as Morocco, Senegal, Egypt and Nigeria all came through strong youth systems. Tanzania’s future stars are emerging from the same pathway.

The Serengeti Boys are not just representing today’s success; they are representing tomorrow’s Taifa Stars. In two years’, time, some of these youngsters will be knocking on the door of the senior national team. Others will continue their development in local and international clubs.

Together, they will form the backbone of a generation expected to carry Tanzania’s ambitions into the future. This is particularly significant as Tanzania prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Kenya and Uganda. Hosting AFCON 2027 presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Tanzanian football.

The tournament will place the country under the spotlight of the entire continent and beyond. Expectations will be high and supporters will demand competitive performances from Taifa Stars on home soil.

The success of the Serengeti Boys suggests that the country’s football development structures are beginning to bear fruit. It shows that investment in grassroots football is producing players capable of competing at the highest levels.

The challenge now is to ensure that these young players continue receiving the support they need. Talent alone is not enough. Proper coaching, quality competition, education, nutrition and career management will determine whether these promising youngsters fulfil their enormous potential.

Tanzania has seen talented youth teams emerge before, only for some players to disappear from the national football conversation. This time, the football authorities, clubs and stakeholders must work together to create a clear pathway from youth football to the senior national team.

The objective should not simply be to celebrate a successful tournament. The objective should be to build a sustainable football culture capable of producing competitive teams year after year. If managed correctly, the current U-17 squad could become one of the most important generations in Tanzanian football history.

The journey towards AFCON 2027 has already begun. While infrastructure projects, stadium upgrades and organisational preparations continue, equal attention must be paid to nurturing the players who will represent the nation. The Serengeti Boys have shown that Tanzania possesses the talent.

They have shown that the country can compete. Most importantly, they have given football supporters a reason to dream. Sometimes progress is measured not by trophies won, but by foundations laid.

The trophy may have gone to Senegal, but Tanzania leaves the tournament with something equally valuable: belief. And if the country continues to trust the process, that belief could pay off handsomely when AFCON 2027 finally arrives.
