Ambitions plans rolled out to boost blue economy

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR Minister for Blue Economy and Fisheries, Mr Masoud Ali Mohamed has outlined ambitious short and longterm plans aimed at enabling Zanzibar fishermen to meet the islands’ domestic fish demand.

Responding to questions from backbenchers led by Abdulwahab Said Abubakar (Chake Chake, CCM), the minister said the government is already supporting fishermen through training, education, and the provision of modern equipment such as boats, nets, engines, and fish-finding technology to boost sustainable fish production.

“For the long term, the government plans to begin constructing fish processing factories and modern fish landing sites during the 2025/2026 financial year,” he said.

Mr Mohamed added that the projects are expected to attract investment in deep-sea fishing, increase fish availability, and strengthen food security in Zanzibar.

Through support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the government also expects to acquire two large fishing vessels measuring 25 metres to further enhance fish production.

The minister noted that the expansion of fish processing facilities across Unguja and Pemba will create employment opportunities, particularly for women involved in the fisheries value chain.
