Local firms to gain more from mining value chain

DODOMA: TANZANIA is stepping up efforts to ensure the mining sector creates more opportunities for local businesses, with a stronger push to position Tanzanian-owned companies at the centre of the industry’s supply chain.
Presenting highlights from the 2026/27 Ministry of Minerals plan in the National Assembly on Monday, Minister for Minerals Anthony Mavunde said the approach focuses on expanding local participation through reserved categories of goods and services exclusively for companies fully owned by Tanzanians.
The strategy aims to link mining growth with domestic economic gains, including employment, skills development and wider business opportunities.
The Mining Commission will continue to publish and enforce the list of services set aside for local firms to ensure compliance across the sector.
“Services covered under the local content framework include transport, logistics, catering, construction works and other essential supplies that support daily mining operations. The policy is intended to increase the share of contracts awarded to Tanzanian companies,” he said.

Mr Mavunde said the priority is to build a competitive domestic supplier base while expanding the number of Tanzanians benefiting from the sector through jobs, services and enterprise development.
He cited strategic mineral projects, including niobium development in Mbeya, as key opportunities expected to generate significant local procurement demand and employment, strengthening the sector’s contribution to inclusive growth.
The minister also highlighted continued growth in mining exports and the sector’s rising contribution to the national economy, noting that efforts are underway to strengthen oversight, enhance revenue collection and sustain investor confidence.
Further plans include expanding geological surveys, improving digital systems and promoting environmental management, alongside programmes aimed at increasing the participation of women, youth and small-scale miners.
