Rising global demand for strategic minerals opens new economic doors for Tanzania
DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has said that the rising global demand for strategic minerals is opening new economic opportunities for the country, particularly during the ongoing transition toward advanced technologies and clean energy systems.
The statement was made on April 27, 2026, in Parliament in Dodoma by the Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, while presenting the Ministry of Minerals’ budget for the 2026/2027 financial year.
Minister Mavunde said that demand for minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements continues to grow rapidly worldwide due to their extensive use in modern technologies, including digital devices and clean energy systems.

He noted that this trend places Tanzania in a strategic position to benefit economically from its mineral resources, especially amid the global expansion of the technology and renewable energy sectors.
According to the Minister, the government aims to increase value addition to these minerals within the country in order to boost national revenue, create employment opportunities, and enhance the contribution of the mining sector to the national economy.
He further stated that this approach will enable Tanzania to fully participate in the global strategic minerals market while strengthening its position within the value chain of these critical resources.
