Significant strides in the Union: Six decades of unity, progress and resilience in Tanzania
DAR ES SALAM: AS Tanzania marks Union Day, the nation reflects on 62 years since the historic unification of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, a milestone that continues to stand as one of Africa’s most enduring symbols of unity, peace and shared destiny.
The anniversary now marks 62 years comes at a time when leaders, led by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, are calling on citizens to safeguard the Union while building on the social, economic and political gains achieved over the past six decades, reaffirming its role as the foundation of national identity and development.
At the centre of this narrative is President Samia Suluhu Hassan, whose recent speeches and policy direction have consistently framed the Union as both a historical achievement and a living system that must continuously evolve.
In her New Year address delivered on December 31, 2025, President Samia said Tanzania had continued to make great strides in development in various sectors and in improving the lives of its citizens, reflecting a broader government position that links the success of the Union to tangible outcomes in economic growth, governance reforms and social cohesion.
“You will agree with me that in 2025, our country continued to make significant progress in development across various sectors and in improving the lives of our people,” said President Samia.
Government data indicates that Tanzania’s economy remains stable, with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth reaching about 5.8 per cent in 2025, up from 5.2 per cent the previous year, while inflation was maintained at an average of 3.4 per cent.
These figures, cited by the President, are often presented as evidence that the Union continues to provide a strong framework for national development.
The government has attributed this growth to sustained investments in strategic infrastructure, mining, agriculture, tourism and financial services, sectors that benefit both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Foreign exchange reserves have also improved significantly, reaching about 6.6 billion US dollars, enough to cover more than five months of imports.
Such progress reinforces the argument made by national leaders that the Union has enabled Tanzania to operate as a single economic bloc, increasing its competitiveness regionally and internationally while ensuring that development gains are shared across both sides of the Union.
Following the October 2025 general election, President Samia Suluhu Hassan secured a new five-year mandate and was sworn in early November 2025, a moment that came with both optimism and political tension.
Despite the challenges that accompanied the election period, her administration has continued to stress the importance of national unity and moving forward collectively.
In her inaugural remarks, she called on Tanzanians to focus on development and stability, a message that aligns closely with the broader theme of Union, which celebrates not only political unity but also peace and coexistence among diverse communities.
“I urge you, fellow Tanzanians, that as we continue building our nation, we should not allow differences in ideology or perspective to divide us and make us lose our development goals and the welfare of our nation. We all know that differences are part of democracy, but they should not be used to divide the United Republic of Tanzania,” said President Samia.
Adding to the national discourse, Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi has in recent speeches continued to stress that the Union remains a vital pillar for peace, security and economic cooperation between the two sides.
In a special interview with the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) ahead of Union Day commemorations, he said the Union has enabled Zanzibar to expand its economic opportunities, particularly in trade, tourism and investment, while also benefiting from shared national resources and international partnerships.
“The Union has enabled Zanzibar to expand its economic opportunities, particularly in trade, tourism and investment, while also benefiting from shared national resources and international partnerships,” said Dr mwinyi.
He has also emphasised the importance of safeguarding the Union through mutual respect, dialogue and adherence to agreed constitutional structures, noting that its longevity is a result of continued commitment by leaders and citizens from both sides.
“The sustainability of the Union depends on mutual respect, continuous dialogue and adherence to agreed constitutional structures. Its longevity is a result of the commitment of leaders and citizens from both sides,” he added.
Government leaders have also pointed to ongoing reforms as evidence of progress within the Union, with President Samia’s 4Rs philosophy, Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms and Rebuilding, remaining central to these efforts.
These reforms are particularly significant as Tanzania celebrates Union Day, with leaders emphasising that unity must go hand in hand with good governance, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
The government has also continued to engage stakeholders across sectors, including civil society and the private sector, in efforts to ensure that development remains inclusive and sustainable.
Recently, Prime Minister, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, said that the President Samia has directed that funds initially allocated for this year’s Union Day celebrations be redirected to the rehabilitation of road infrastructure damaged by ongoing heavy rains across the country.
“The 62nd Union Day celebrations will be held at the regional level across the country, where national leaders will undertake visits, lay foundation stones and inaugurate development projects,” said Dr Nchemba.
Union Day continues to draw its significance from the vision of founding leaders Julius Nyerere and Abeid Amani Karume, whose partnership in 1964 created one of Africa’s most enduring political unions.
Modern leaders frequently refer to these founding principles, including self-reliance, mutual respect and equality, as guiding values for the present generation.
Diplomatic statements and commemorations over the past year have echoed these ideals, describing the Union as a model of cooperation and shared identity that continues to inspire both citizens and international partners.
This historical legacy remains a powerful reminder of the importance of unity in achieving national goals and maintaining peace in a diverse society.

Beyond economics and politics, the Union has played a crucial role in shaping Tanzania’s national identity, fostering a sense of belonging among its citizens.
Leaders have repeatedly emphasised that the Union’s success lies in its ability to maintain peace and stability even during challenging periods.
This has been particularly relevant following the political tensions surrounding the 2025 elections, where calls for unity, dialogue and reconciliation have remained central to government messaging.
Union Day celebrations are therefore not only symbolic but also serve as a platform for reaffirming collective responsibility in nation-building, encouraging citizens to reflect on their role in preserving the country’s unity and promoting development.
As Tanzania marks 62 years of the Union in 2026, the focus is expected to centre on consolidating gains while addressing emerging challenges.
Recent statements from leaders indicate that this year’s celebrations will emphasise the importance of unity and solidarity in national development, continued investment in key economic sectors, strengthening governance and institutional reforms and promoting peace and social cohesion.
For Union Day, the message from government leaders remains clear: the strength of Tanzania lies in its unity and the progress achieved over the past six decades serves as a testament to the enduring relevance of the Union, which continues to shape the nation’s future.
