Agroecology drive to boost food, nutrition security

MOROGORO: MINISTRY of Agriculture will step up efforts to collaborate with research institutions and universities in implementing the National Agroecology Strategy (2023– 2030), aimed at strengthening food and nutrition security in the country.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Professor Peter Msoffe, made the remarks during the opening of the Annual Tanzania Agroecology Stakeholders Forum held recently in Morogoro Region.

Prof Msoffe said the government also commends Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) for its significant contribution to advancing agroecology in Tanzania.

He noted that SUA is promoting agroecology through its partnership with the McKnight Foundation, particularly in developing a training curriculum for agricultural extension officers.

According to him, the university’s efforts are playing a key role in improving extension services and boosting farmers’ productivity nationwide.

He further urged the university to pilot the curriculum in collaboration with trainers from Agricultural Training Institutes (MATI) to facilitate wider dissemination of agroecological technologies.

Professor Msoffe also emphasized the importance of utilising the Bihawana Farmers Training Centre in Dodoma for practical agroecology training.

In addition, he underscored the need to involve farmers directly through the “Farmer’s Voice” programme, which is expected to gather views, challenges and solutions from grassroots stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, SUA Vice-Chancellor Professor Raphael Chibunda said the university’s goals align with the broader vision of strengthening collaboration and innovation in addressing food system challenges.

He identified key challenges as climate change, environmental degradation and socio-economic constraints.

Professor Chibunda said SUA continues to strengthen its role as a national hub for innovation and knowledge in agroecology.

“We recognise our responsibility to generate knowledge, foster innovation and prepare the next generation of professionals in the agroecology sector,” he said.

He added that SUA is proud to host the Tanzania Agroecology Hub, as well as the forum that brings together diverse stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

Earlier, the project coordinator, Professor Paul Kusolwa, said the forum had brought together stakeholders across the agroecology value chain to enhance collaboration and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and research findings.
