Rwanda honours the Tanzanian humanity in rescuing genocide victims

NGARA: A delegation from Rwanda has arrived in Tanzania to honour Tanzanians who showed extraordinary courage during the 1994 genocide, recognising their role in rescuing survivors, preserving victims’ bodies and upholding humanity at a time of crisis.
Upon their arrival, the delegation visited Ngara District in Kagera Region as part of ongoing efforts to commemorate the tragedy and strengthen the long-standing historical ties between the two neighbouring nations.

Leading the Tanzanian side, Director of Strategy and Global Politics Unit, Ambassador Thobias Makoba, said the visit holds deep significance in preserving history and appreciating the selfless contribution of citizens who stepped forward during one of the darkest periods in the region.
Additionally, the ambassador reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to continued cooperation with Rwanda across various sectors, particularly in promoting and safeguarding peace.
Head of the Rwandan delegation and Deputy Mayor for Social Affairs in Kirehe District, Janviere Mukandayisenga, said the visit offered an important opportunity to recognise and honour the heroes, noting that such gestures help sustain remembrance while reinforcing lessons on humanity and peace.
During the visit, the delegation met some of the Tanzanian volunteers in Rusumo village, where bodies of Rwandan victims were laid to rest, and held a joint prayer session in memory of those who perished.
The 1994 Rwandan Genocide remains a powerful platform for remembrance, reflection and prayer, continuing to strengthen diplomatic relations between Tanzania and Rwanda while inspiring present and future generations to uphold unity, compassion and lasting peace.
