Tanzania names the blue economy as its top priority in the 2026/27 budget

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has placed the blue economy at the centre of its upcoming fiscal agenda, with the Vice-President’s Office outlining key interventions aimed at unlocking Tanzania’s vast marine potential.

Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office, Hamad Yussuf Masauni, presented the 2025/26 budget implementation report and expenditure estimates for 2026/27 to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Administration, Constitution and Legal Affairs in Dodoma on March 26, 2026.

Masauni said the office will prioritise coordination of the National Blue Economy Policy (2024) and its implementation strategy in the next financial year, as part of efforts to maximise benefits from marine resources.

He noted that capacity building for experts in blue economy fields will also be strengthened, alongside coordination of the preparation of a Marine Spatial Plan (MSP) to guide sustainable use of water resources.

On Union matters, the minister said the office will continue to provide public education to various groups, while coordinating cooperation meetings between Union and non-Union institutions of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.

He added that the office will also conduct evaluations of such engagements to improve coordination and effectiveness.

Further, the government will continue compiling documents and records on Union matters for the national archives, while initiating early stages of constructing Union documentation and records centres (MAKAVAZI) in Dodoma for Mainland Tanzania and in the Urban West Region for Zanzibar.

The plan signals a renewed focus on strengthening both economic transformation through the blue economy and institutional cohesion within the Union framework.
