Councillors urged to boost economic activities

KIBAHA: IN a bid to align with the government’s strategy to transform the Coast Region into the country’s industrial hub, councillors in the region have been urged to be innovative in generating economic activities by effectively utilising available local resources.
They were also encouraged to familiarise themselves with the region’s development priorities in order to enhance its competitiveness particularly at the international level and to devise new strategies for attracting investors.
The call was made by Regional Commissioner (RC) Abubakar Kunenge on Thursday during a working session held in Kibaha Municipality.
The meeting was attended by District Commissioners, District Administrative Secretaries, council education and business officers, council chairpersons, ward councillors, as well as professionals and other stakeholders from across the region.
The session formed part of follow-up meetings on the implementation of pledges made by President Samia Suluhu Hassan during her first 100 days in office after being sworn in last November.
“Some of you are new while others have been re-elected, but all of you need a clear understanding of the region’s priorities. When fully implemented, these priorities can boost productivity and attract industrial investment,” RC Kunenge said.

He added that councillors must also remain informed about global economic trends, noting that the region is competing at the international level.
“If we succeed in establishing strong foundations for economic growth at the grassroots, we will be supporting not only the Coast Region but the entire country,” he said.
In another development, RC Kunenge emphasised the region’s commitment to establishing effective systems for the safe discharge of industrial wastewater in order to protect the health of residents in all industrial areas.
