Tanzania, South Africa commissions sign MoU to enhance fair competition

South Africa: Tanzania’s Fair Competition Commission (FCC) and the Competition Commission of South Africa(CCSA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pave the way for mutual cooperation in safeguarding fair competition and protecting consumers in both countries .
The deal, concluded in September 9th, 2025 during a five-day official tour of FCC leaders to South Africa, paves the way for closer collaboration in information sharing, capacity building, joint research and coordinated enforcement of competition and consumer protection laws.
FCC Acting Director General, Ms Khadija Ngasongwa, said the agreement would not only enhance institutional capacity but also promote competitive markets across Africa by fostering innovation, efficiency and fairness for businesses and consumers.
“We hold in high regard the achievements of the Competition Commission of South Africa. Your vast experience in complex competition and consumer matters will serve as an invaluable resource for us as we strengthen our enforcement framework,” she said.
She emphasised that the MoU was more than a document, describing it as “a bridge that connects our institutions, our economies, and most importantly, our people, in pursuit of a common goal: fair and inclusive markets.”

On her part, CCSA Commissioner Ms Doris Tshepe assured full support for the collaboration, emphasizing that shared expertise and coordinated efforts would help address emerging competition and consumer protection challenges across the continent.
“Our MoU marks a significant step in regional cooperation, reflecting both countries’ commitment to strengthening regulatory frameworks and ensuring fair and transparent markets that safeguard the interests of consumers and businesses alike,” she noted.
Officials from both commissions expressed confidence that the partnership would deliver tangible results for Tanzania, South Africa and the wider region by promoting transparency, accountability and consumer welfare.
