Mwinyi hails military games as unity symbol
ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has described the Tanzania Military Games as a symbol of national unity and cooperation among the country’s defence and security forces.
Speaking at the official opening of the games organised by the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces Sport Council (BAMMATA) at Mao Zedong Grounds in Urban West Region, Mwinyi said the event also provides an important opportunity to strengthen government efforts in improving sports infrastructure and building closer ties between security organs and the public.
He noted, “Sports serve as a vital bridge uniting defence institution, reinforcing their solidarity in safeguarding the nation’s borders.” According to Mwinyi, Tanzanians’ growing passion for sports contributes not only to improved health but also to discipline, cohesion, economic growth, tolerance, dignity and respect for the rule of law.

He further noted that the government is investing in modern sports facilities that meet international standards set by CAF and FIFA, aiming to boost Tanzania’s capacity to host major competitions.
“The government’s broader goal is to ensure that sports open doors for economic opportunities, strengthen cooperation, promote tourism and enhance community wellbeing,” he said.
President Mwinyi also underlined the critical role of defence and security forces in nurturing sports, pointing out that the Military Games have produced many of Tanzania’s most talented athletes.
He urged participants to embrace the spirit of unity and solidarity that defines the games, while commending heads of the defence and security agencies for sustaining the tradition since its inception in 1977.
The Chief of the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF), General Jacob Mkunda and the Zanzibar Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports Tabia Maulid Mwita said at the colourful event that they were happy with Zanzibar hosting this year’s military sports.
This year’s edition of the Military Games brings together teams from seven institutions: The National Service (JKT), Ngome, Zanzibar Government (Vikosi), Immigration, Prisons, Fire and Rescue and the Police Force.
