NM-AIST unveils innovations, seeks teamwork

ARUSHA: THE Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) has developed 33 innovations and technology programmes, some of them already in the market and others awaiting partnerships for full-scale implementation.

The revelation was made yesterday by the Institute’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maulilio Kipanyula, during a visit by Arusha Regional Commissioner Kenani Kihongosi, who toured the campus to observe the institute’s ongoing research and technological activities.

Professor Kipanyula said that the innovations are geared towards addressing societal needs through the adoption and transfer of technology to end users.

He also highlighted the institute’s contribution to higher education, having produced over 350 academic experts currently serving in universities across the country.

“Our institution plays a key role in driving development within the East African Community and beyond. Innovation is the cornerstone of both national and international growth and we are proud to be at the forefront,” said Prof Kipanyula.

He added that NM-AIST is a leader in producing market-ready technologies with great potential for uptake by various stakeholders across sectors.

During his tour, RC Kihongosi commended the institute for its technological advancements, including the Param Kilimanjaro Supercomputer, which is used in high-speed data processing for academic, biomedical and government-related functions.

“This institution is a hub of innovation from powerful computing systems to modern radios and other technologies ready for commercialisation. I commend your efforts. I’ll be back, but in the meantime, I urge staff to work together harmoniously and continue striving for greater productivity,” said the Commissioner.

Also present was Arusha District Commissioner Joseph Mkude, who expressed his appreciation for the institute’s commitment to solving real-world problems through science and technology.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continued collaboration with NM-AIST to enhance impact both locally and internationally.
