MARA: HIV/AIDS infections can be brought under control if stakeholders including government and other sectors will take joint actions against the scourge.
Addressing the public to mark World AIDS Day that was sponsored by Barrick North Mara at Ingwe Secondary School on Sunday, Tarime District Commissioner Maj Edward Gowele said the government has played its part by committing 2.4bn/- as loans to various groups in areas that have recorded high prevalence.
“The government, through Tarime District Council will empower different economic groups with loans from 10 per cent of its internal revenue. So far, we have set aside 2.4bn/ -, “said Maj Gowele who was represented at the event by Tarime District Administrative Secretary, Mr Saul Mwaisenye.
On his part, Barrick North Mara General Manager, Mr Apolinary Lyambiko said teamwork in providing education on HIV/AIDS was an essential tool to combat the dangerous syndrome.
“Understanding the nature of HIV/AIDS is an important component in the war against the infections. At North Mara, we are dedicated to be your good neighbours and stakeholders in improving the welfare of the community, “said Mr Lyambiko.
Earlier, the Tarime District HIV/AIDS Coordinator, Mr Godfrey Mkenda told the public that the rate of infections has gone down from 1.7 per cent in 2023/2024 to 1.5 per cent by November, 2024.

Mr Mkenda attributed the downward trend to community awareness, training of the medical personnel, HIV testing, counseling and distribution of essential drugs.
The celebrations were coloured by various activities including HIV testing, community education and free distribution of condoms. This year’s World AIDS Day is “Choose the right path, eradicate AIDS.”
