UDSM wins top award at 49th DITF

DAR ES SALAAM: THE University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) won first prize in Higher Learning Education, Skills Development and Research Institutions category at the 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF).

The award was presented by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa during the closing ceremony.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Prof Nelson Boniface, said the award reflects the collective effort of students, academics, researchers and partners and serves as a call to action.

UDSM Chancellor Dr Jakaya Kikwete praised the creativity and relevance of the university’s projects during his visit to the pavilion, inspiring students and staff.

The university showcased innovations across agriculture, engineering, renewable energy, education, health, water purification, mining and geosciences.

Dr Kikwete noted a significant number of the innovations leads by students and young researchers, underscoring the institution’s deep commitment to nurturing youth potential and advancing real-world impact through academic work.

Kikwete also emphasised the importance of translating academic research into commercial applications, urging UDSM students and faculty not to let their work end at exhibition.

“Research should not end with the awarding of degrees or exhibition it must be commercialised,” said Dr Kikwete.

The UDSM Sabasaba Preparations Committee and Head of Communication, Dr Dotto Paul Kuhenga, praised the university’s success, attributing it to teamwork, strategic planning and a strong vision.

He said the award reflects UDSM’s tradition of excellence and forward-looking approach. Beyond exhibits, UDSM hosted daily events like academic showcases, innovation pitches, counselling, business clinics, alumni networking and health services, making the pavilion a vibrant hub for collaboration among academia, industry, government and the public.
