INEC tasks Human Rights Commission to observe the General Elections

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (THBUB) has reaffirmed its commitment to actively participate as an observer in the upcoming General Election scheduled for October this year.
The Commission aims to ensure the election is free, fair, and credible, in line with fundamental human rights principles.
Speaking to the press today in Dar es Salaam, Commissioner Khatibu Mwinyichande confirmed that the Commission has already received official accreditation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to serve as election observers.
“According to Commonwealth laws, we do not interfere with the conduct of the elections directly; we serve as observers. Elections are a fundamental human right, and our role is to ensure that this right is upheld by monitoring the adherence to legal frameworks and the principles agreed upon by the nation,” said Commissioner Mwinyichande.

He emphasized that THBUB’s involvement goes beyond observing the voting day. Their observation begins from the early stages of the electoral process, including voter registration, campaigns, and continues through to the announcement of results.
“We apply for accreditation from INEC for each election so that we can officially observe. Election observation covers all stages, not just the act of voting. We work closely with the electoral commission to ensure procedures are followed and that the election is conducted freely and fairly,” he explained.
Additionally, the Commissioner stated that THBUB continues to receive and resolve various public grievances as part of its broader mandate to protect and promote human rights in the country.
The 2025 General Election is expected to be one of the most significant in Tanzania’s history, with various national and international institutions preparing to play their part in ensuring transparency and integrity throughout the electoral process.
