250 small-scale miners trained in safe, productive mining

GEITA: AT least 250 small-scale miners in Geita Region have received training aimed at promoting safe, efficient and productive mining practices.

The training was organised by the Prime Minister’s Office for Labour, Youths, Employment and Persons with Disabilities, as part of a national initiative to enhance skills development and improve the mining sector’s value chain.

Speaking during the official opening ceremony held in Geita Town, Acting Director of the Department of Employment and Skills Development, Ms Alana Nchimbi said the training programme runs from June 23rd to June 27th, 2025.

Ms Nchimbi noted that the objective of the programme is to equip the national workforce with relevant skills that promote both self-employment and employability, ultimately reducing the proportion of unskilled labourers in favour of a more competent and capable workforce.

“The miners have received training on mining legislation, the safe and proper use of chemicals and explosives, identification of mineralrich rock formations and value addition techniques for minerals,” she explained.

She added: “The ultimate goal is to enable them to embrace advancements in science and technology so they can transition from small-scale to medium and eventually largescale mining operations.”

A Senior Geologist from the Ministry of Minerals, Mr Joseph Matalu said the programme includes both theoretical and practical components. The curriculum covers effective exploration, mining techniques and safe mineral processing methods.

“This initiative also serves as a timely reminder to miners about their obligation to comply with the laws, regulations and procedures that guide sustainable development in the mining sector,” Mr Matalu emphasised.

Geita Regional Administrative Secretary, Mr Mohamed Gombat, commended the training initiative, saying it would boost productivity, enhance workplace safety and ensure that mining operations keep pace with modern technological trends.

“For the 2024/2025 financial year, the Prime Minister’s Office plans to train about 600 workers in the mining regions of Geita, Mbogwe and Chunya,” Mr Gombat explained.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Geita Women Small-Scale Mining Association (GEWOMA), Ms Asia Masimba commended the programme, saying it has helped miners to better understand data management and adopt appropriate technologies in their mining operations.
