GASCO Tanzania cherishes AI technology to ensure safe and healthy workplace

SINGIDA: THE Gas Company of Tanzania Limited (GASCO), a subsidiary of the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), has made significant investments in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to safeguard the safety of workers and the infrastructure used in the processing, transportation, and distribution of natural gas.

Speaking during the ongoing Occupational Safety and Health Week exhibitions organized by the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) in Singida Region, GASCO’s Occupational Safety and Environment Officer, Mr. Mlotwa Simbeye, stated that natural gas operations require a high level of safety precautions.

“This is why the company uses advanced detection and risk identification systems to prevent potential dangers such as gas leaks or fire outbreaks,” he said.

Adding, he said: “We have modern equipment that can detect potential risks even from 500 kilometers away, and our systems can respond automatically without requiring a person to be physically present at the site,” he said.

He also added, “We use SCADA systems that provide real-time alerts on any faults in the gas processing and transportation systems and immediately take control to prevent incidents.”

Speaking at the exhibition, Engineer Hassan Temba highlighted that GASCO has a major responsibility in managing, operating, and maintaining natural gas processing, transportation, and distribution facilities in the country.

He also mentioned that GASCO is involved in the development of natural gas infrastructure, including the construction of pipelines for industrial and domestic gas supply, as well as building fueling stations for vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).

“That is why we decided to participate in this exhibition—to help Tanzanians understand the role of GASCO in national development,” said Temba.

Additionally, TPDC’s Community Development Officer, Mr. Oscar Mwakasege, noted that TPDC has several responsibilities, including overseeing strategic oil and gas exploration projects in Tanzania. This includes the oil exploration project in the Eyasi Wembere Block, which spans five regions, including Iramba and Mkalama districts in Singida Region.

“Furthermore, TPDC is a key stakeholder in community development. Through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, various projects have been implemented to improve livelihoods and maintain strong relations with communities in areas affected by natural gas projects. In Mtwara Region, for instance, TPDC has completed the construction of the Msimbati Health Center,” said Oscar.

The exhibition, dubbed “The Role of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies in Enhancing Workplace Safety and Health’ attracted various organizations and companies participated to showcase their workplace safety and health systems.
