80 Orthopedic experts in Dar for Scientific Symposium

DAR ES SALAAM: NEARLY 80 orthopedic experts from China and Tanzania are in Dar es Salaam for a bilateral scientific symposium aimed at exchanging experience, knowledge, innovations, and the use of technology in orthopedic care. During the event, two patients are expected to undergo revision hip and knee replacement surgeries at Muhimbili National Hospital – Mloganzila.

Speaking on behalf of the Director of Muhimbili National Hospital – Mloganzila, Professor Mohammed Janabi, the Director of Surgical Services, Dr. Godlove Mfuko, said that the symposium focuses on new innovations in hip and knee replacement devices as well as surgical techniques.

“There are specialists from major hospitals in China who have come to share their experiences with local experts and also explore opportunities for our doctors to go to China for further learning,” said Dr. Mfuko.

He added, “Today, we are discussing various research findings, technologies, and surgical procedures. Tomorrow, May 18, 2025, two patients will undergo hip and knee replacement surgeries performed jointly by Chinese and Tanzanian doctors. This presents a great learning opportunity for our local specialists.”

Dr. Mfuko noted that the surgeries take about three hours when all necessary equipment is available, and that they have already conducted revision surgeries on seven patients, which were successful when equipment was accessible.

Director of Medical Services at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Hamad Nyembea, stated that Tanzania is becoming a hub for specialized medical care, striving to produce more specialists. The current symposium, he said, is part of efforts to improve advanced services, particularly in orthopedics.

“In terms of investment, orthopedic specialists are now available throughout the country, and several specialized services, such as hip and knee replacements, are being conducted locally, though challenges still remain,” said Dr. Nyembea.

He explained that due to these challenges, Tanzania has decided to collaborate with Chinese experts to acquire more advanced skills and technologies from developed countries. “After gaining the necessary knowledge, our specialists will be able to perform these procedures independently,” he added.

The symposium is seen as an important platform for improving medical services, enhancing local capacity, and strengthening bilateral relations between Tanzania and China.
