ZIFF gears up for its 27th edition with record-breaking numbers

ZANZIBAR: AS the countdown begins to the 27th Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), excitement mounts in Stone Town, Unguja, where the prestigious event is set to kick off from August 1st to 4th.

This year, the festival promises to be the largest yet, boasting an impressive lineup of 70 films selected from a staggering 3,000 submissions worldwide.

A panel of 100 delegates meticulously sifted through entries spanning 30 countries, underscoring ZIFF’s global appeal and influence in the world of cinema.

This year’s ZIFF competition categories are Best Feature Film, Best Documentary, Emerson Award for the Best Zanzibar Film, Best Short Film or Best Animation, Best East African Film, Best Actor (East Africa), Best Actress (East Africa), Best Actor (Tanzania) and Best Actress (Tanzania).

An honorary award will be given to the ZIFF Chairperson – Award for Lifetime Achievement.  ZIFF has also introduced The People’s Choice Award which is reserved for TV drama Series from East African Community (EAC) countries (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Somalia, and The Democratic Republic of the Congo).

Under the theme ‘Rejuvenation’, ZIFF 2024 aims to invigorate audiences with a diverse selection of films that reflect the rich tapestry of global storytelling.

From gripping dramas to eye-opening documentaries, the festival will explore themes vital to cultural revitalization and societal progress.

During a press briefing in Dar es Salaam on yesterday, ZIFF CEO, Joseph Mwale, expressed enthusiasm about this year’s programme, emphasizing the festival’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent and fostering international dialogue.

“This year, we have seen an unprecedented level of interest and participation. It is truly a testament to ZIFF’s growing influence, as a hub for filmmakers and cultural enthusiasts alike.” Mwale noted.

The European Union (EU)’s continued support underscores ZIFF’s international stature, with Ambassador Christine Grau reaffirming the EU’s commitment to promoting cultural exchange and cooperation through initiatives like the Youth Program.

This year, 100 youths from 30 countries will converge in Stone Town to participate in workshops, networking events, and screenings, further enriching the festival’s global footprint.

“100 selected delegates, including young filmmakers and activists from around the world, participated in the summit,” she said.

The ambassador pointed out, “The youth group will engage in cooperative filmmaking and training under the direction of media educators and industry professionals.

“The delegates will work in one of seven production teams, each of which will concentrate on a distinct social issue, such as youth empowerment, poverty, violence, environment, or discrimination.

“By the end of the summit, seven short films with strong messages to raise awareness for these issues will have been created and will be screened and celebrated during this awards night,” she said in closing.

Highlighting ZIFF’s significance on the international stage, Festival Director Hatibu Madudu praised the quality and diversity of submissions received.

“The films selected for this year’s competition span continents and cultures, offering audiences a unique window into global cinema,” Madudu remarked. “From Iran to Nigeria, India to Argentina, each film brings a distinctive voice and perspective to the screen.”

In addition to film screenings, ZIFF will feature thought-provoking Difficult Dialogue sessions, where attendees can engage in discussions on pressing social issues amplified through the lens of cinema.

As preparations reach fever pitch in Unguja, anticipation grows for what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of film, culture, and creativity at ZIFF 2024.

With a record-breaking number of submissions and a lineup that spans the globe, ZIFF 2024 is poised to captivate audiences and reaffirm its status as East Africa’s premier film festival.
