Zera moves to accelerate Tanzania’s transition to clean transportation as solution to rising fuel costs

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA’S electric vehicle company, Zera has unveiled an ambitious strategy to accelerate Tanzania’s transition to clean transportation, positioning electric mobility as a practical solution to rising fuel costs, environmental pollution and growing demand for affordable transport.

The announcement was made during the launch of a new Electric Vehicle Charging Station in Dodoma recently, an event officiated by the Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi.

Speaking at the launch, Zera Marketing Manager Samuel Masawe said the company has already deployed more than 2,000 electric vehicles in Dar es Salaam and is now expanding its operations and charging infrastructure to other regions across the country.

“Our goal is to address the challenge of rising fuel prices by offering a practical and affordable alternative,” Masawe said. “Electricity remains accessible and affordable across Tanzania, making electric mobility a viable solution for many citizens.”

He said Zera’s vehicles run entirely on electricity and do not require fuel or engine oil, significantly reducing operating and maintenance costs for owners. According to the company, a fully charged vehicle can travel up to 320 kilometers on a single charge.

To support the growing adoption of electric vehicles, Zera has partnered with TANESCO to develop charging infrastructure nationwide. The company has already established a charging station along Samora Avenue in Dar es Salaam, capable of charging two vehicles simultaneously.

Customers can recharge their vehicles at home using standard electricity connections or utilize dedicated fast-charging stations, providing greater flexibility and convenience.

Masawe said the company’s long-term vision includes establishing a local electric vehicle assembly plant to transfer technology and industrial expertise to Tanzania.

“The assembly facility will lower vehicle ownership costs, create employment opportunities for young Tanzanians and accelerate the transfer of technical knowledge into the country,” he said.

The company believes local assembly will play a critical role in strengthening Tanzania’s industrialization agenda while creating a sustainable electric mobility ecosystem.

Despite growing interest in electric vehicles, Masawe acknowledged concerns over driving range and the limited availability of charging infrastructure. However, he said Zera is working closely with TANESCO to expand charging networks across the country.

“We want charging stations to be as common and accessible as fuel stations,” he said. “That will build confidence among users and support the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.”

Industry observers view Zera’s investment as a significant step toward reducing dependence on fossil fuels, lowering transportation costs and advancing Tanzania’s green economy for future generations.
