Z’bar urges early El Niño disaster preparedness

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar Government has urged residents to begin preparing for the heavy rains and strong winds expected between October and December, calling for early action to reduce the risk of flooding and other disasters.

Second Vice-President Hemed Suleiman Abdulla issued the call during the launch of the Kijini Shangwe 2026 Bonanza at Kijini Sports Ground in North “A” District, North Unguja Region.

He urged residents to follow weather advisories issued by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), clear drainage channels and keep their surroundings clean to allow water to flow freely during the rainy season.

Mr Hemed also warned against building in natural water catchment areas and advised people living in flood-prone locations to relocate to safer areas before the rains intensify.

“We do not want to wait for disasters to happen before taking action. We want to go through this period safely, and that requires early preparation and adherence to expert advice,” he said.

While stressing disaster preparedness, Mr Hemed said the government was continuing to implement programmes aimed at improving livelihoods and creating economic opportunities for residents.

He said women in Kijini had received capital through community groups to expand their businesses, while young people had benefited from vocational training in electrical installation, welding, plumbing and carpentry to improve their employment prospects.

The Second VicePresident also highlighted ongoing development projects in the area, including improvements to school infrastructure, expansion of clean and safe water services in Potoa and Jugakuu, upgrading of the Kijini and Pangachumvi-Kigomani roads and construction of the Kijini sports ground.

He encouraged residents to embrace sports, saying they promote healthy lifestyles, strengthen community ties and help nurture young talent that can create future employment opportunities.

North Unguja Regional Commissioner, Gallos Nyimbo said the regional administration would continue educating residents about the expected rains and encourage those in high-risk areas to relocate before the rainy season.

He added that continued investment and development projects were helping strengthen the region’s economy, attract tourism and create jobs for local communities.

The Kijini Shangwe 2026 Bonanza, supported by the Rise and Restore Foundation chaired by Kijini Representative and Deputy Minister for Construction and Transport Badria Atai Massoud, began with a community walk and fitness activities before concluding with sporting competitions that brought together residents and local leaders.
