Z’bar steps up nationwide fight against child cybercrime

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar Ministry of Communication, Information Technology and Innovation has stepped up efforts to protect children from online abuse by launching a nationwide campaign to promote safer use of digital platforms.

Announcing the initiative, Minister Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga said children are increasingly exposed to harmful online content as internet access grows at home and in schools, making stronger protection measures necessary.

“The use of the internet has grown rapidly, and our children are exposed to all kinds of information online. We must act now before this becomes a national crisis,” he said.

Mr Soraga noted that Tanzania currently lacks specific laws and regulations that comprehensively address online child protection, prompting the government to introduce measures aimed at safeguarding children from digital risks.

He said the campaign will bring together parents, guardians, teachers, government institutions, development partners and civil society organisations to raise awareness and promote responsible internet use.

The ministry will work with the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, UNICEF, SOS Children’s Villages, Serensic Africa and other stakeholders to implement the initiative.

Director of Cybersecurity and Information Protection Khalfan Mohamed Othman said the campaign will reach all districts in Unguja and Pemba through schools, Qur’anic institutions and community groups, targeting children below 18 years.

Digital forensics and cybersecurity expert Yussuph Kileo said similar efforts launched in mainland Tanzania in February 2024 have started producing positive results.

He said research shows that 67 per cent of Tanzanian children are active online, while about 200,000 children aged between 12 and 17 have experienced cybercrimes, including online abuse and grooming.

Mr Kileo called for greater awareness among children on how to stay safe online and report incidents, while urging authorities to strengthen laws, policies and regulations on child protection.

He added that mainland Tanzania is considering introducing special SIM cards for children with features designed to restrict access to inappropriate content.

Serensic Africa Chief Executive Officer Ester Mengi commended the government initiative, describing it as timely and pledging support to ensure its success.

The campaign is being implemented under the slogan: ‘Protecting Children Online is Everyone’s Responsibility – Take Action.’
