Zanzibar’s House of Rep session begins today

ZANZIBAR: THE ordinary session of Zanzibar’s House of Representatives starts today in Chukwani.

Among the activities scheduled for the session is the presentation of feedback reports from various ministries on the implementation of instructions issued by the Standing Committees of the House.

House Clerk, Ms Raya Issa Msellem, explained during a media briefing, “The Standing Committees of the House issued instructions to different ministries in previous sessions. Each ministry will now present its progress on implementing these directives.”

Another key aspect of the two-week session will involve ministries responding to 280 main and supplementary questions from legislators concerning various development areas.

Ms Msellem emphasised, “Preparations for the House session are complete. I urge Members of the House to adhere to regulations, including punctual attendance during the session.”

The session will also include a discussion of a bill titled “An Act to Establish the Zanzibar Agricultural and Livestock Research Institute and Other Matters Connected Therewith,” which will be presented by the Minister for Agriculture, Irrigation, Natural Resources and Livestock, Mr Shamata Shaame Khamis.

The bill aims to establish a robust institute tasked with modernising research in agriculture, livestock and forest resources in Zanzibar.

This new institute will replace two existing ones: the Zanzibar Livestock Research Institute, established under Act No. 7 of 2020 and the Zanzibar Agricultural Research Institute, established under Act No. 8 of 2020.

The merger is in line with directives from the Zanzibar Revolutionary Council, aiming to create a single, comprehensive institute for planning, conducting, managing and coordinating research in these fields.
